Yeah I agree, shredded leaves give great insulation and protect the soil until the snow settles in. They also break down well over winter and improve structure by spring. Compost helps at any time of year too, and December gives you the chance to build those layers without rushing.

This is interesting. I see your point. I think that many online do romanticize going off grid without realizing how tough it is. I live on a homestead, aim for as much self-reliance as possible. Not easy, but it's achievable with effort. For me, it’s less about ideology and more about living simply.
