tbf I absolutely agree that Hollywood is extremely wasteful and there are better solutions

During filming, they can't move anything too visible between takes otherwise it would jump in the editing. Actors have to stay in their marked positions and sometimes have to film eating scenes repeatedly. They'd get sick if they ate for every shot so they spit in a bucket when cut is called.
