I've seen it done with the outlines (Multiversus) and by making models one solid color GoW Ragnarok). I think both are great ways to handle that

I will also make the most annoying character in that game yellow. I hope being yellow helps them learn to better their behavior

Personally one of the greatest accessibility options I've seen is to color code character for those with sight problems. It doesn't effect gameplay at it's core (it's essentially a way to label opps and npcs) plus I can punish Atreus when he mouths off by turning him yellow until he learns to stop.
