Tools like Cursor or Claude Code make us *feel* more productive, but can we trust that perception?

I added a new blurb to my 2025 post about AI, “The Post-Developer Era”, which digs into a recent study about developer productivity and AI:
Perception vs. reality So, here’s an interesting question: are we actually faster when we use AI tools in our development, or does it just feel faster? This question was recently explored in a 2025 study(opens in new tab) from METR. They assigned hundreds of real-world open-source tasks to experienced developers. The experiment group used Cursor with Claude 3.5/3.7, while the control group was forbidden from using any sort of AI. The results are striking: When developers are allowed to use AI tools, they take 19% longer to complete issues—a significant slowdown that goes against developer beliefs and expert forecasts. This gap between perception and reality is striking: developers expected AI to speed them up by 24%, and even after experiencing the slowdown, they still believed AI had sped them up by 20%. So, in this study, developers thought they were working 20% faster, but in fact, they were working 20% slower. 😮 Now, there are lots of caveats here. The study only looked at 16 developers, and most of those developers had limited prior experience using AI tools. In fact, the participant with the most AI experience was an outlier in the findings, and was able to work 38% faster with AI. So, I’m not fully comfortable with the study’s conclusion, but I do think there’s a lot of truth to the idea that we can’t always trust how we feel about our own productivity. We tend to remember the exciting moments where an agent knocks it out of the park, while the less-successful attempts fade from our memory. You don’t need to know every nitty-gritty detail of a language feature or library to write good code. In fact, obsessing over every tiny aspect usually leads to overelaborate, and overly clever code.
