Life is tough. At high altitudes, it’s even tougher. Think rugged mountains, changing climate, and low oxygen.
So how do birds pull it off? 🐦⛰️
Join me tomorrow, Aug 12, 2:15–2:30, Genomics 1, Grand F at #AOS2025 to find out!

Good birding this morning with friends visiting all the way from Nepal.
Showed off cardinals, flickers… and even a Mississippi Kite! @thebirdguy.bsky.social #AOS2025

Almost ready (slides pending!) for #AOS2025. Excited to catch up with friends, meet new ones, and spend the week rushing from one room to another. If you spot me in the wild, say hi!

Vultures are casually protesting on the runway yet EIA didn’t bother to mention what vultures are there and how such risks could be mitigated.

Took a very very long time to publish as we wanted to highlight this when key discussions were happening with the authority. There are newer developments but EIA in Nepal 🇳🇵 has been a joke.

Looking at a bird flying in the sky, the Wright brothers dreamed of flying too and built the airplane.
Today, airplanes and birds share the sky, making bird strikes a real threat to planes, people, and birds alike.1/3 🧵

Late sharing this, but feeling incredibly honored to have received multiple awards this year at Kent State University. Grateful for the support, mentorship, and opportunities that made it possible!

The importance of so-called “stupid” questions in science is immense, often leading to unexpected discoveries. I talked about this, along with how undergraduate students can begin their journey in research, during a training program organized by Bird Conservation Nepal, Pokhara. #ornithology

Undergraduate Research 101: “Dal Bhat Power” to Research Hour

Excited to join the upcoming Ornithology training (online) to discuss how to support undergraduate students, especially in ornithology, in Nepal. #ornithology

Sushmita, my undergrad mentee, is engaging with local communities in Nepal’s western mid-hills to understand their knowledge and perceptions of birds and conservation. Local perspectives are key to effective conservation! Celebrating her efforts this Women’s History Month! #ornithology

These farmers chose compassion over harvest, proving humanity and nature can thrive together. Small acts, big impact. 🌱🐦

Amid the harvest, farmers left one rice plant untouched—a tiny haven for an Ashy Prinia’s nest. A powerful reminder that coexistence with nature is possible, even in the busiest seasons. Compassion grows alongside the crops. 🌾🐦

An undergrad I am mentoring is doing her field survey. She sends me daily updates about what bird she observed, “oh did I do that wrong because we saw that forest bird on settlement” and everything I used think during my first survey. Makes me miss going to the field.

To my fellow grad students: if you’re feeling stuck, think back to the younger version of you who fell in love with this field. If you're in that phase, know you’re not alone. Let’s keep moving forward and find the wonder that started us on this path. 🌱

5/ It’s not that I don’t love what I do now—I truly do. But sometimes, the demands can feel and even a bit unfulfilling. Maybe that’s just part of growing up. I think back why i started in the first place. It wasn’t just about achievements; but joy of learning smthng meaningful.

4/ Now, as I’m buried in data analysis and endless writing, I realize that this isn’t exactly what younger me had imagined. If he saw me now, he might feel a bit disheartened. But that’s okay—growth and change are all part of the journey.
