It may look like decay. But instead it's a new form of growth. A transformation.

Just how many blackberry flowers do you really need to look at? 🌱🌸

Well, here's four...

I'm a backyard gardener/homesteader. I'm trying to supplement our food but I know I'll never replace our full supply. I'm also trying to bring joy, deliciousness, and surprise to our food. Spring is very good for that! 🍓🌱

I was gone for THREE DAYS and the garden is newly filled with flowers and fruits and flowers that will become fruits. 🌱

Prairie phlox! Paw paw flowers! Oranges in bloom! Fava beans!

(yes I'm just listing 🌱 things)

My close-up photos are always hiding a...less beautiful context. There's tons of weeds and failed beds and dying plants. But sometimes I have the energy to do something. 🌱🐔

1) My lettuces and Ethiopian kale.
2) The actual bed they're in, surrounded by weeds.
3) I weeded!
4) The chickens helped!

Fava beans are doing great, flowering like mad and lots of bean pods popping up. Louisiana Sweet Orange is in bloom. Strawberries are loving life. Spring is well underway! 🍓🍊🌱

An ode to beneficial insects:

Never shall I spray you
With poisons or cruel toxins
You're part of this garden
And I need you where you are

Today I made strawberry ice cream from ingredients almost entirely sourced from the surrounding 15 miles. And with such an emphasis on local, I didn't even want to waste the strawberry tops. Luckily I had some friends on hand to eat them! 🌱🍓🦎🐔

Beautiful spring flowers. 🌱🌸🌷

These girls are doing the hard work right now. The puppy, on the other hand, is eating all of my asparagus. 🌱🐔🐶

A few photos from around the yard, including one particularly nasty (and impressive) weed. 🌱🐌🍓

Our Black Australorps have been laying (relatively) huge eggs compared to the Speckled Sussexes. In theory both should be making "medium" eggs but apparently Biggs and Wedge didn't get the memo! 🐔🌱🥚

Native plant gardening (in the US at least) can be really hard. Not everyone sees the beauty in it and of course the blooms are very seasonal. But I can see how lovely it's all going to be.

Native blueberries, slender mountain mint, prairie phlox, and a grasshopper friend I found while weeding. 🌱

Here come the flowers! Lots of buds.

- Fava beans up close
- Blueberries
- Pomegranate
- Native Coral Honeysuckle

The aforementioned good radish harvest. 🌱

Finally home after being away for more than a week, and it sure does look like spring down here! Baby fig leaves, blueberries about to bloom, a good radish harvest! Good yard. 🌱

Got to meet the alpacas herd that my friend has! They're pretty great. Not necessarily going the alpaca route myself but I'm going to lightly "apprentice" for a while to learn as much as I can about livestock. 🌱🦙👩‍🌾

I'm out of town but I got this photo that my fava beans are blooming! 🌱

Homegrown lemons! Going to do my best to preserve them well or use up as much as possible. Juicing and zesting and candying the peels. #lemon #gardening 🌱🍋

I overdid it a bit yesterday with yardwork, housework, and cooking/baking. But the plants sure look happy, including tiny spinach sprouts.

And these croutons (from homemade bread) are awesome. Link to recipe is in the comments.

Today the Merlin app thought my chickens were a pileated woodpecker. Usually it just thinks they're mallards or Canada geese, this was a new one. 🪶🐔
