It's worse for Dragon Ball of course, it's exclusively telling a story and isn't also leaning on gameplay to make these transformations hit harder.
But everyone's always talking about Super Saiyan 2, and I know people sort of erroneously named Super Sonic 2 after it, but like

Excalibur Sonic, for as cool looking as he is and for the most BADASS transformation sequence...IS just Super Sonic with sword.
None of these transformations were mid by any means but they weren't particularly strong in their own stories.

Excalibur Sonic, for as cool looking as he is and for the most BADASS transformation sequence...IS just Super Sonic with sword.

Like I remember when the fanbase went NUTS over "Dark Sonic" from Sonic X, and I'm sorry but...what a nothing transformation. A slightly darkened, angry Sonic who's upset that Tails might have been severely hurt (iirc) and it lasts all of 30 seconds because EGGMAN snaps him out of it.
