The corresponding author could easily fix this with corrigendum. “It has been brought to our attention by the acknowledged investigators who obtained the original data that y is accidentally labeled as x”

Great article! Didn’t know it was yours. I had seen it and passed it on to the other members of our Research Integrity Team.

If x is presented as y it falls under the category of falsification. At least in US upon receipt of complaint the Research Integrity Office would put together a committee to investigate and determine whether it was knowing, intentional, or reckless vs honest error. (This is what I do these days)

Start with email to Prof laying out case to create paper trail if necessary. Saw preprint, concerned about authorship and interpretation/presentation of data we acquired. Would like to discuss.

Best practices for authorship require contribution to both obtaining data and writing the manuscript. Acknowledgement requires approval of those being acknowledged which requires discussion of contributions

Complicated. Depends on authorship policy and what you mean by misrepresented. If it’s an authorship issue and of no career consequence I would be inclined to let it go. If it is a misrepresentation of the data then it becomes a responsibility to truth. DM me if you want to discuss more.

But not necessarily collective. If everyone had a rheostat all the opinions can be readily and dynamically summed to arrive at a consensus voltage

Not a big fan of supplementary data. It is generally poorly presented. Since we really don’t read print anymore, integrate all necessary data into the manuscript and present properly. If it is archival data label it as such.
