This is Trump’s argument for acquisition 'that way or another.' He refers here to the self-determination, which is considered as less important tan state's integrity. Greenlanders, however, while wanting to departure Denmark don't want to be Americans but a sovereign country.

Greenland is a part of Denmark and Trump is claiming that Denmark hasn't fulfilled her obligations towards Greenland properly, and Greenlanders want to separate from Denmark.

Therefore, when claiming that Canada, against the will of her government and citizens should be a part of the US Trump is questioning Canada's sovereignty. More complicated is the issue of Denmark.
