So apparently it IS possible to "wake up" the poverty meal of beans and rice.
A quarter cup of frozen green peppers, a tablespoon each of red pepper flakes and minced onions, and half a pound of left-over ground beef.
Substitute 1/2 of the rice water with beef broth.
