Understanding how BCM nutrient cycling sustains mat growth is key, as these mats can harbor pathogenic bacteria, smother benthic invertebrates, and are proliferating rapidly as climate change accelerates, especially in tropical ecosystems

We reviewed publications on BCMs since 1965 and address how spatial, temporal, and successional dynamics structure nutrient cycling within BCMs. We find that oxygen gradients within BCMs structure carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycling across ecosystems and mat types.
