Check out the gear on this Hemipsilichthys papillatus (MCP 39539), a member of the 'primitive' loricariid subfamily Delturinae from the Paraíba do Sul drainage in southeastern Brazil. It has large cheek odontodes like the more diverse Hypostominae subfamily, but it can't evert them.

Huh, looks like Chaetostoma loborhynchos Tschudi 1846, the type species of Chaetostoma, to me. Of course, who's to say whether this is a species that's been known for over 175 years, or one that's entirely new to science?

Through the e-COL+ project at @mnhn.fr I recently obtained data for this cranial CT-animation of #Vandellia_wieneri, an Ecuadorian #bloodfeeding_catfish that was described 115 years ago from the #Napo_River, is known only from this holotype, and is distinguished in part by its lack of dentary teeth.

2011, Guyana: Trying to cut a trail through thick swamp forest with Uncle Benji and the two Dannys. Hard work, and ultimately a failure as we had to go overland around the swamp forest to reach the rapids habitat I seen on a helicopter overflight.
