Postmambo is in Essaouira, with the group Ahwach Haha, Amazigh musicians who have come in 70 kilometers from their village for the occasion. Instrumentation is 3 flutes, three frame drums, and a gang of footstomps and handclaps. No singing, just stomping. Photo: Steve Coats.

Postmambo is in Marrakech, listening to Sakhi Abdelghani, oud, and Youssef Tamsamani, darbouka, playing Abdelhalim Hafiz’s song “Qariat Al Fingan (reader of cups),” as in reading fortunes from cups. At the Paella House restaurant, where it is early and the crowd hasn’t arrived.

Postmambo is in Ouarzazate. This is the tazerzit, the fibula that is an identity symbol of the Imazighen (who reject the imposed name of Berbers), surrounded by elements of their ancient alphabet, called Tifinaght, in their language Tamazight.

Postmambo is in Volubilis, a former Roman commercial center of 20,000 people that lasted some 400 years in Morocco’s agricultural heartland, now a partly excavated ruin on an abandoned hilltop. This mosaic on a patrician’s floor depicts a clown riding a donkey backwards.
