We protect open space on the Peninsula and in the South Bay for the benefit of all.
We spotted three bucks and thought: that’s a solid return on investment. 🦌 💰 Every acre of protected open space is a home for wildlife like these, keeping ecosystems strong for generations to come.

This rain is unseasonal but is it "earthquake weather?"
Earthquakes happen pretty evenly regardless of weather. Big shifts in air pressure from storms like typhoons and hurricanes can sometimes lead to tiny earthquakes in Earth's crust but these are statistically insignificant.
So short answer? No🤪

Isn't it fascinating that a simple acorn holds everything needed to sprout a majestic oak tree? 🌳 As a vital food source for a variety of wildlife, acorns play a crucial role in California's oak ecosystems. This life-sustaining harvest begins each September when they ripen and fall to the ground.

Coyotes using culverts like… 👀🐾

This dog-shaped creature is a coyote, but what the heck is a culvert?! These roadside tunnels promote drainage and serve as safe passageways for wildlife! In Coyote Valley, culverts help animals cross roads and roam between the Santa Cruz Mountains and Diablo Range.

It’s blazing out here in the Bay! 🔥

So… would you rather teleport to a chilly woodland stream in February or swap spots with an elephant seal and just blob around in the water all day?

It's World Otter Day! Spotted in Santa Cruz: one sea otter, one crab, one floating feast 🦦🦀 Sea otters dine on their backs like little buoyant buffets. In doing so, they help keep kelp forests thriving. Who knew mealtime could be ecosystem care?

A sweet fact for #NativeBeeDay: Nearly half of North America’s 4,000 bee species live west of the Sierra Nevada! The Santa Cruz Mountains—with their varied climate and plants—are an A+ place to see this biodiversity up close. Here is artist Obi Kaufmann's dazzling take on pollinators you might see.

Adult pumas are famously solitary. In fact, there’s no widely accepted name for a group of them! But kittens stay with mom for up to 2 years, learning to hunt and survive. Read how Vishal Subramanyan captured rare images of a puma family in the Bay Area redwoods: openspacetrust.org/blog/vishal-...

Behold American dunegrass! This native plant is perfectly adapted to the Pacific Coast—and it’s thriving at San Gregorio Ranch, a stunning coastal property POST is working to protect. Its underground stems, called rhizomes, form a strong network that anchors shifting sand and helps prevent erosion.

Coyote Valley is a crucial wildlife corridor—but harrowing barriers stand in the way.

@haleygrunloh.bsky.social’s powerful illustration for @baynature.org captures a triple threat:

🚧 Monterey Road
🚂 Union Pacific Railroad
🚗 U.S. 101

~300 wildlife-vehicle crashes have been documented since 2006.

Meet the arboreal salamander, a local critter living up in the trees. They’re prone to acrobatic feats, having evolved square toes for gripping bark and semi-prehensile tails to dangle from branches. You may spot them while out and about in the Bay Area, but don't get too friendly — they bite!

Thanks to our partnership with photographer Vishal Subramanyan, we know this gray fox has been moseying through a POST-protected property in San Mateo County! Fun fact: gray foxes are one of two canid species who climb trees. Their rotating wrists and semi-retractable claws make it happen. #wildlife

Happy Valentines Day, lovebirds! Seasonally monogamous, #mourningdoves emit their wooing call beginning in late winter and pair up for the warmer months. They're also in the same bird family as homing pigeons, who famously carried love notes in their beaks. 💫 The more you know!
