There is a particularly tender ache to realising something that is permanent for you is temporary for others. The sharp slap of naivete. Then the adjustment. They help to pack supplies into the ships. They press cassettes and datachips into hands, for strength and continuity of thought. They laugh and wave in the loading docks, their ever-present scarf double-layered over their face to protect from the exhaust. They take refuge in the private booth in Heaven that was offered to them as sanctuary-away-from-Sanctuary. They take Cardinal Corona's garden keys when he goes. They need an entire handful of choristers just to do the work he did, but they do it. They direct, they choreograph, the garden keeps flourishing. There is music and light. Every now and then, they sit back, noting that the choir has done another complete rotation of faces: no part the same as it was when it began They wonder about that, sometimes, as they stand by the Adjudicator's side. Judge-Cardinal and Troubadour; sing a song of justice for us. Sing a song of peace. Of the violence it took to create, to maintain. Of the sacrifice, the suffocation, the wasted effort and time. Was it worth it, after all? How many of their parts are the same as when they began? How much change makes something unrecognisable? They restring their guitar, they finish the restoration of the electric organ, they try and fail and try again to keep the correct distance from people. They hum their prayers throughout their days. They hear other people humming, too, and that brings them closer to the Invictus than their own. Every time. They write. They connect, and allow themself to be connected to. Sometimes, it is easier than ever. Often, it is just as hard. But rarely, rarely, is it harder.

Now, you are almost caught up. Nothing to speak of in between, of course. The only thing left to tell you is that I have joined the Family. In return, they will encourage their ranks to join us. A victory for all, after all. It is important to me to say that I did not know this would be happening when I began defending them behind closed doors. In fact… Hesitates, then commits. I am not sure I would have been in a place to agree to it if the fervent factionalism had not pushed me so hard. Perhaps this makes me the reactionary I have tried so hard to quell the creation of. Perhaps exceptional circumstances simply beget exceptional reactions.

over a week ago i wrote this out to deliver in #over/under for a big dramatic reveal that ended up simply not happening. so it just Sat There. but as of a few minutes ago i've officially managed to organically hit every single anecdote in roleplay so i'm CHECKING IT OFF BABYYY, SPEECHIFIED,!!!
Sibling-Cardinals: the stars whose name I was gifted were said to look like the pendulum of a clock. I connected with this because of its rhythm— its metronomic power— but I invoke it now to ask for the indulgence of… Time. A series of moments. Chronological order. 1. The ship I largely grew up on passes through an energy net set up by enterprising corporate-sponsored pirates. Many in cryo wake up suffocating to death as the reverberating shockwaves take out system, then back-up, then emergency back-up. Many get their life back as huge portions of corrupted data erase the evidence of debt. Balance can look simply like violence if your point of view is too short. The grandmother who raised me— is still raising me, though I cannot admit it, because I am young— incurs significant damage when the drone helping her in her farm duties glitches and attempts to... as we understand it, harvest her. When she can speak again, she asks me to step in as choir director. "You waste your talents on lonely pursuits," she says. Uncharacteristically critical, but she is in much pain still. "Your faith is strong enough and needs no further work. Use it instead to help others strengthen theirs." I have to bristle, because I am young. She is correct anyway. 2. Stepping into the sanctuary on the Dream for the first time, folders of sheet music in my arms— I'm learning quickly that this marks me as an eccentric but I'd learned not to trust data, as you might imagine— I'm outright shocked by the esotericism on display. It is a blessing for my reputation that I have already been so offended by the air quality that I have my face covered. We did not much go in for the cards on the transport. Whether it was true that tarot was legally seditious for its technical depiction of monarchy or if simply no-one was willing to test the limits was unclear, but the suppression was effective regardless. And now, suddenly, here it is, everywhere: openly dealt, widely trusted. It still scares me for a while, but eventually, I come to find great comfort in it, and the hands of the oracles who shuffle it. That which seems dangerous can, in fact, be a gift. 3. Our Metropolitan and Pontiff come to me with an offer, and a warning. You are all intimately familiar with both. First, I think of Sol. The Invictus shines within me. I see stars, I feel the last moment of tension in a bud just before it blossoms, I hear the choir that has always hummed in my dreams. Then, briefly, I think of my long-dead grandmother. I know that she would advise me to gratefully, reverently decline. "A title is not the work, and worse, it will convince you that it is," she would sometimes say. I am old enough now to know she needed to believe that to face the day every morning. To not crumble under the weight of never getting the recognition she deserved. To rituallistically stave off resentment. I tell the Radiances that devoting myself to the cultivation of Solarian creativity has been my life's work, and I am prepared to give any amount of it to that aim. I mean it. I will never stop meaning it. 4. As many of us have, I arrive at the Bratva Ball with a gift for the Obshchak: in my case, a somewhat standard song of friendship. As vines up the lattice can keep it upright / As pollen needs wind to lift it to flight. The party is loud. There are more people in one room than I would have seen in a full month for much of my life, and there are multiple rooms. I keep thinking I'm used to the Dream, and then something reminds me I am not. As fruit spreads the flower / as flower bears fruit / As trees stretch higher the deeper their root. Myself and the Many-Voice work carefully through the words in the bustle of the party. As water and ground produce naught without seed / May our combined efforts bloom all we need. I spend much of the night quiet, observing, close yet far, wondering why I know so few of these people. Even those I came with. I resolve to change this. I mean it. But I do not follow up on it. 5. I am still covered in the wax from my Flare ceremony. Some has flaked off, but some cakes deep into the lines of my hands, and it all sat long enough that the colour stained my skin. In the Caliban operations center, I find calm. It is maintained, purposeful. In the sanctuary, I find panic. It is stoked, purposefully. I am detained. I am released. A litany against fear is shouted down. Fear continues to be brought to me, shouted at me. My mind returns, more and more, to the calm focus of the operations center, and I tell myself that it does not. That I do not think of it. That I do not find comfort in it. I do not mean it.
