Thought exercise: how could $600 million improve your city?
Reposted
There are so many worthwhile investments Portland city government should be making with the $1.7B Clean Energy Fund. Renovating the Moda Center is absolutely not one of them.

Inside Portland’s $1.7B climate fund, which is being floated to help fix the Moda Center
Portland’s billion dollar climate fund is being eyed to help pay for upgrades to the Moda Center, in an effort to keep the Trail Blazers in the city.

The Moda Center is fine... and it could be a lot better. No argument for me there. Lump me in with Bad Bunny and Kendrick Lamar as someone who wants more.

But @billoram.bsky.social is wrong when he writes "Our city’s aspiration is what is on trial here."

No, our city's priorities are.

Critics of the Moda Center funding package will say that the building is... fine. Wow, what a compliment.

What would it cost to keep elements of Portland Winter Lights Festival permanent, expand deeper into Eastside?

Last estimates I saw for renovating Keller Auditorium *AND* building a Broadway-capable venue at PSU fits nicely within that package state and local leaders are trying to pony up for the Moda Center.

I love me some Blazers, but what is the return on $600 million? I know what a professional sports team does for civic pride and to provide entertainment, all worthy things. But does it move the needle for local economy?

$600 million to hire hundreds of teachers, and social workers, implement healthy meals in schools, and upgrade HVAC at PPS sites. Pair with PFR to make Portland a place for families to thrive. Watch the net inflows of Van Lines, Mayflowers, and U-Hauls as young families seek out quality of life.

Building housing, fixing our roads, and expanding our public transit system & bike infrastructure would not only reinvigorate our central city, but create jobs and real, lasting infrastructure. It would directly benefit Portlanders.

Even during the winter, there are at least three different year-round farmers markets in Portland—Peoples’ Food Coop, Montavilla, PSU. Summertime? This number explodes, with farm-fresh produce available in most corners of the city.

Portland is many things. Broken, maybe. But it counts a rich beer/coffee/dining scene, natural amenities like a robust park system & increasingly accessible waterfront, a storied history in urban & transportation planning, and an artistic & independent ethos as selling points. We’re not done!
