Yeah, agree. Read it a few years back. Enjoyed it ok but after finishing it didn’t stay with me like a great novel does. Kind of forgot about it. The Avatar of mid century literary fiction.

My GF was in multiple beach landings & captured in Italy. Spent last year of the war as a POW in Germany. Was assigned to clean up human remains left by allied fire bombings. German citizens snuck food & news of the war to the prisoners, so he distinguished b/w “real Nazis” & Germans trapped in it.
