It's interesting how differently I read digital vs. physical comix. I recommended @sispurrier.bsky.social & Vanessa Del Rey's THE VOICE SAID KILL 1 after reading a digital copy, but after reading a physical one, even though it's exactly the same, I think it's the best new crime comic of the year.

THE HORIZON EXPERIMENT trade comes out this week & a lots have asked will there be continuations of any of the books. So I’m posting the intro from the trade but the short of it is, the answer lies in two time-tested comic book traditions; trade sales and letter writing campaigns…:

In LESS THAN A WEEK, orders are due for the trade of THE HORIZON EXPERIMENT, collecting the one-shot pilots for all these new series. Trade sales help us determine if the pilots will graduate to series so for anyone interested in more, we'd love it if you picked up a copy & spread the word.

Speaking of worth the hype, @ashcanpress.com & @stefanolandiniart.bsky.social's WE'RE TAKING EVERYONE DOWN WITH US is so so good. It does that thing the best comics do where it tweaks the things you love & does something totally new with it & I can't wait to see where it goes.

I was angry & jealous of how good @tylerboss.bsky.social & @adrianoturtulici.bsky.social's YOU'LL DO BAD THINGS is. Serial killer giallo goodness that's gory, stylish, and just so freakin' cool. It's been getting a lot of advance buzz & is totally worth the hype.

Today (& maybe yesterday?)'s FOC for some GREAT comics, so even if my dates're wrong, you should still tell your stores you want them:

Starting with ABSOLUTE MARTIAN MANHUNTER which I was dying to read & everything I'd hoped it'd be from @denizcamp.bsky.social & @javierrodriguez.bsky.social .

THE HORIZON EXPERIMENT: MOTHERFU*KIN’ MONSTERS - Evil Dead for black nerds by By J Holtham & Michael Lee Harris - is out today! From the moment I read it, it scratched an itch I haven’t seen since Layman & Guillory’s CHEW so it’s awesome he liked it.

Big release week! THE HORIZON EXPERIMENT: MOTHERFUC*KIN’ MONSTERS by J Holtham & Michael Lee Harris & the collection of my &

2 weeks til FOC for the last HORIZON EXPERIMENT 1-shot: FINDERS / KEEPERS by @definitelyvita.bsky.social & @skyepatridge.bsky.social about a reverse Indiana Jones who steals from museums to bring artifacts back to their native cultures. Huge thanks to @pattonoswalt.bsky.social for blurbing!

Just finished FML 1 & wow. The @davidlopez.bsky.social art is amazing and it's a great reminder that not only is @kellysue.bsky.social one of the most distinct voices in comics but also how lucky comics is to have her. Talk about flipping a genre & making it your own

Even though I’ve already read it, it’s good to have a hardcover copy in my hands. Congrats again @alexsegura.bsky.social. Out today!

The MAN’S BEST collection is out 12/18 in comics stores & 12/24 everywhere. To celebrate, I’ll answer the question I get asked most: How did I write for @jesselonergan.bsky.social? So here’s 2 approaches I used for 2 separate pages and a huge reason why writing for Jesse is so fun

I’m super proud to say THE HORIZON EXPERIMENT: MOON DOGS 1, @tananarivedue.bsky.social 1st solo feature work in comics is finally in stores TOMORROW with art by Kelsey Ramsay. Following a family of East African werewolves secretly living in Miami, it focuses on being a minority w/n a minority

It’s an honor to have the creator of BITTER ROOT David F Walker as a fan of THE HORIZON EXPERIMENT: MOTHERFU*KIN’ MONSTERS by J Holtham & Michael Lee Harris. It’s Evil Dead for blerds & in stores 12/18 but orders close NEXT MONDAY if you want a copy!

Taiyo Matsumoto's TOKYO THESE DAYS is the first manga to make my pull list. He's seemed to have taken a classic manga heroic narrative structure and focused it around making comics. The fact I have no idea how that's possible is one reason I'm so enthralled by it.

It's so rare I get to re-read books but I went on an Ed Brubaker & @seanphillips.bsky.social kick and re-read SLEEPER, one of their 1st original works together to see their early magic clicking and it was just as good as I remembered
November 16, 2024 at 7:09 PM
A good in-continuity SUPERMAN book must be the hardest thing to write considering how rarely I come across one I'm into so I've been relishing in how clever @joshuawilliamson.bsky.social & Jamal Campbell's run has been

The book that started the Comics that Meet the Moment award was reading @tomtaylormade.bsky.social & @brunoredondo.bsky.social's NIGHTWING & admiring how Tom's work was reflecting contemporary progressive issues in fun action books. Fortunately, I'm behind so haven't run out of their stories
November 16, 2024 at 7:09 PM
I've read a lot of Big 2 books lately. In my head, there's an award I give out which I call Franchise Comics that Meet the Moment. Right now, that goes to @tomking.bsky.social & @sampereart.bsky.social's Wonder Woman. Everyone knows how good this book is & I am sadly unoriginal to give more

I think @mattkindt.bsky.social is one of comics' most prolific idea machines. His & Wilfredo Tores's BANG! is the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen of action-movie archetypes, one of those I can't believe I didn't think of it concepts that's just as clever & inventive in its execution
November 16, 2024 at 7:09 PM
Speaking of X-books, I also read X-FACTOR by @jeffreyjensen.bsky.social & Arthur Ransome about 2 human detectives on a taskforce dedicated to mutant hate crimes. The book has criminally never been collected & has an overall tone I wish I saw more X-books
November 16, 2024 at 7:09 PM
To me, 1 of the most impressive books in the Krakoa line was @definitelyvita.bsky.social, Bernard Chang & Paco Medina's CHILDREN OF THE ATOM. I was already a Vita fan, but this made me realize comics wasn't giving their unique voice its proper space. If I ever write an X-book, I'm keeping this handy
November 16, 2024 at 7:09 PM
1 of my pathologies is if I miss one comic in stores I'll get years behind reading a story until I can find that comic at cover price or less. Which is to say, just in time for the era to end, I finally read Jonathan Hickman, @pepelarraz.bsky.social & RB Silva's HOUSE OF X / POWERS OF X opus

I was stunned how John Ridley & Stefano Rafaele's GCPD: THE BLUE WALL took something as iconic as the corrupt Gotham City police department cops to tell a story about police reform in the heightened Batman universe
