While Canada is often viewed as a haven for freedom, Emancipation Day reminds us that slavery existed here too, and that its legacy continues to shape the lives of Black Canadians today.

It asks us to reflect on the past, acknowledge the present, and commit to building an inclusive and equitable future where the history, resilience, and contributions of Black communities are fully recognized.

This day celebrates the freedom of over 800,000 enslaved African people, including those who were once held in bondage inside modern-day Canada.
