I’m political 💙 (immigration, inequality, climate, democracy) but I like jokes, art, books, and wonders of science & nature too.
Not that PR wants statehood, only that it’s a (not-that-)small place without Congressional representation so it gives the lie to small rural white states crying about the oppression they’d face without two senators each. DC is definitely interested in voting representatives, see its license plate.

There is also this, of the 2020 election, from www.core77.com/posts/90771/.... Original map of vote by county, looking almost entirely red, at the link.

My favorite of the year so far: One Hundred Shadows by Hwang Jungeun. Eungyo and Mujae work in a rabbit warren of workshops threatened with demolition. There, people’s shadows are starting to rise away from them. Weird, subtle, unforgettable. #booksky #koreanlit

From her East German upbringing in a family of discreet dissenters through her career in science to 16 years as Germany’s chancellor, Angela Merkel has a lot to tell. She’s good on Trump and Putin. Her clear prose and Juliet Stevenson’s crisp narration make the audiobook an easy listen. #BookSky

An update from North Dakota 2008. One character goes west to the oil patch; most stay home, in town and on the farms south of Fargo. There’s a teenage love triangle and small-town scandal. There are hints of magic, an environmental reckoning, and, surprise, lots of humor. 4.5/5 #BookSky #BookReview

This thriller about a boy who survives the wreck of a migrant boat and the girl who helps him puts some flesh on the bones of a familiar news story. Alternating chapters from before and after the wreck is great for building tension. 4/5 #BookSky #BookReview

Beautifully written, full of poetic metaphors, but also grounded in grubby specifics of daily life. Cyrus is obsessed with a death that will make his life have meant something, then he goes to Brooklyn with Zee and meets an artist. 4.5/5 #BookSky #BookReview

The author takes three trips: to Dakar, where he looks for history and finds modern Africa; South Carolina, where teachers fight proposals to ban his books; and a Palestinian writers’ festival where he starts with the modern and finds history. Check out his interview w Ezra Klein. 4/5 #BookSky

Follows the four members of the band from childhood through their meeting in Athens to superstardom to the present day. None of the four talked to the author and he fills in with details of contract negotiations and just-OK rock criticism. 3.5/5

In her fourth novel Sally Rooney switches to male protagonists, two brothers who are mourning their father and sorting out their relationships with women. It’s not all interpersonal dynamics—this one opens out into a nice little social novel. 4.5/5 #BookSky #BookReview #SallyRooney

I’m underwhelmed by this list. I’ve only read 4 and want to read just 13 more. Maybe this is a weird year or maybe it’s me. Fave so far: Everyone Who Is Here Is Gone. Most anticipated: The Silence of the Choir or the Muldoon book. @nytimes.com
