Indoor air quality scientist. Thoughts are my own. No financial interests in air cleaners, monitors or other related devices.
Over 400 people in the US die each year due to unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning, and 100,000 visit the ER (www.cdc.gov/carbon-monox...).

EPA just published a new factsheet and infographic to help avoid CO poisoning (hint: indoor combustion).

Another great NIST Summer Institute Middle School Science Teachers workshop on Indoor Air Quality (tinyurl.com/3ve6typx) in which the teachers learned how depth filters work and built five Corsi-Rosenthal boxes complete (tinyurl.com/86df5y2b).

This year we got a bee themed air filter!

300,000 air change measurements?!

Classroom air change averaged 3.0/h (about required), but varied significantly: between schools, within each school and within each classroom throughout the year.

Great work from @patriciafabian.bsky.social's group.

Schools with mechanical ventilation have lower CO2 concentrations than those without.

BUT all schools have significant variability between classrooms showing importance of monitoring each classroom.

More great work from @patriciafabian.bsky.social's group.

This is probably not a good idea for reviewing a standard for a ballot. But I can see people taking the short cut.

Well that is one way to increase ventilation...

"It is okay for things to get wet if they can dry." We have reduced the ability for things to dry but not the ability to to get wet.

Healthy Buildings 2025 - Europe is getting started.

Excited to learn from the world about how we can be healthier indoors.

Q3) Does Air Change rate vary within a school? YES!
Q4) Does Mechanical HVAC increase air change rate in schools? YES!

So excited to see more of these types of papers.

It is HERE!

Boston public school classroom CO2 sensor analysis. Over 100 million CO2 observations from 3206 sensors across 125 schools.

www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Q1) How good are the sensors? +/- 75 ppm.
Q2) Does air change rate change a lot in a classroom? YES

Ever wonder if those real-time radon sensors work?

Reasonably well.

Exhaled aerosol particles (1-5 um) create a wake behind people walking down hallways. Cool CFD simulations with implications for hospital corridors.

Another cool preprint from @jljcolorado.bsky.social's group.

They show a MnOx-based catalyst removing GUV222 nm generated ozone, with only a 12.5% loss over 16 weeks.

They show complex catalyst chemistry with oxidized VOCs decreasing, but reduced VOCs increasing.

Interesting GUV222 pre-print by @jessekroll.bsky.social's group.

A manganese oxide catalyst-based air cleaner reduced secondary chemistry related to GUV222 generated ozone. AND it delivered a 290 m3/h CADR for formaldehyde!

Although, it did emit acetone and NO.

AGU's conference center in Washington DC has a municipal sewer heat exchanger to heat and cool the building.

They also have demand control ventilation with CO2 readings visible to occupants.

Cool AGU!
