I want a browser extension to tell me what it said where I opened that tab 3 weeks ago: what was the paragraph I clicked on, in whose post on what site?

And Renee Good was a small woman who wasn't scared of them, which emasculated them, so they killed her.

I mean, he's a mealy-mouthed politician, so I wouldn't expect any better. Just saying his attitude might not be as defeatist as the quote by itself makes it sound.

The question was, looking forward to a possible Dem Congress in 2027, would you impeach then? So, interpreting generously, maybe he meant he hopes Republicans will join him to stop this now so we don't have to wait until "that far" in the future (rather than "that far" meaning impeachment).

The next Dem admin should take heed of MMT and create endowments to permanently fund all the important agencies. www.youtube.com/watch?v=7O_3...

I'm not sure how it might work. Maybe the software would allow community moderation similar to bluesky. Maybe some communities can be invitation-only. Maybe if open public forums are a necessity, we form a public moderation utility that can't be sued for its decisions.

I hear you. Online spaces can be great. But maybe people could then move to truly P2P platforms (such as nostr) that have no company in the middle to either manipulate an algorithm or be sued. (Could ATproto be made to work that way too, or does it require a Bluesky corp for hosting?)

The horror! Might actually have to speak IRL in order to be heard. More seriously... you make a good argument that it would be chaos, but if it really would mean the end of Facebook and Xitter forever (though sadly I'm sure TPTB wouldn't let that happen), that could be a godsend for society.

Not just the images.
LLMs make it much more difficult than in the past to distinguish sincere hard effort from automated boilerplate, so that it is harder to tell a sincere boss committed to helping you work better from one who is lazy and couldn't care less about you. There are similar dynamics for other situations.

Part of a proper high school civics education should cover how pushing for a good society against your own financial interest is still in your own self-interest. Life would be way better with policies like, say, Finland with somewhat higher taxes & better education & healthcare & more vacation time.

But we still need to yell at Congress and make it clear that we're furious about the Big Ugly Bill's ACA cuts, so that Republicans and Dems both will see that the Dems will have no choice but to hold out for restoring the ACA subsidies after the January 31 shutdown.
November 12, 2025 at 8:01 AM
So we're rescuing the 42M people who rely on SNAP, and we'll get a cleaner shot at restoring ACA subsidies in just 2.5 months. Plus: swearing in Grijalva, getting a vote on Epstein, and restoring air traffic through the holidays. Sucky for a couple months for people on ACA, but a good deal overall.

This isn't the "cave" it sounds like: it funds SNAP through next Oct but most of the govt will likely shut down again on Jan 30. When that happens, (a) people will already be seeing their health insurance premiums soar and (b) Dems won't need to cave again to save SNAP since it will still be funded!

Dem-led states, on the other hand, could do a lot with a little boldness: moneyontheleft.org/2025/05/09/b...

Excellent article! One minor critique, though to be fair the article kind of acknowledges this: it sounds more like an ordinary business failure than intentional enshittification, which would normally involve bigger success/profits while the quality declined. Sad story, though.

I really appreciate when you sometimes post these kinds of concise summaries of pieces of history I basically know about but haven't wrapped my mind around on my own (with more interpretation than a site like wikipedia would allow but still true enough). Thank you.

Can you even imagine the Republican outrage if Biden had bulldozed the east wing to build himself a ballroom funded by his donors?

For staples/utliity items, the same products should be available forever. If I like a particular, say, toothpaste, underwear, or word processor, I should be able to keep buying/using it. And if I buy it again, it should *be the same*, not new and improved with different ingredients or fibers, etc.

Taking photos/videos without the express permission of everyone in the frame should be considered rude, and posting/publishing such photos should be assumed to endanger them. (Reasonable exceptions for, e.g., professional press, police body cams, people documenting crimes, etc.)
