Martha
Elizabeth Taylor in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf ?" Over the tears, when anyone has asked me what "movie monster" scared me the most, without hesitation, I've always answered "Martha"....and, to anyone who's ever said, "She wasn't a monster.", I've always replied, "You've obviously never seen the movie." See, when I saw this in a theater, at age 9 (1966 was before ratings...), I was already pretty certain of two things : One....characters like Dracula, The Mummy, Wolfman, etc. weren't based on anything real, so there was no chance of ever running into one of them. Two....a character like Martha probably was based on someone real, so, that meant I was in danger of running into a "Martha".....sadly, I did....more than once. Fortunately, I lived to tell about it.

Playing piano, one night, 40 years ago...(read the alt text, regarding this song, for me...)
In 1985, two days before the picture was taken at the Indiana State Fair, we were pulling into Cincinnati a little after sunup. There was a scheduled show, for the next afternoon, at the Riverbend Amphitheater. This was a nice Saturday morning, though, and I'd talked everyone into pulling into the River Downs race track, next door, to watch the horses do their morning workouts. Seeing that we'd pulled in there, and assuming we were lost, Neil had his driver turn his bus in behind us. He, and his longtime steel player, Ben Keith, got out, and walked over to the fence, where we were all standing. "What are y'all doing ?" Neil asked. I asked him if he'd ever watched race horses doing their morning workouts. He said he hadn't, so he and Ben leaned on the fence, too. While we were standing there, I said, "You know where we are, right ? You've got to do the song. Can't come to this state and not do the song." (he hadn't been doing it, recently) Looking away, he said, "That was a real painful time, a lot of people would like to forget." I said, "So...the Neil Young who was my hero, growing up, wouldn't let people forget." There was a moment of silence, before he said, "Damnit.", walked away, and got back on his bus. Ben moved over closer to me, with that wonderful grin, that only Ben Keith could get. Looking back towards Neil's bus, I asked him, "What did he mean ?" Still grinning, Ben replied, "He hates it when people are right." Worried that I'd pissed Neil off, I said, "Was that all ?" Putting a hand on my shoulder, Ben, said, "Yeah, that was....that...and, we're doing the song."
