I have a feeling they truly did want to find a way to retrofit BOTW into the overall timeline (cause Aonuma himself said they only bother to do it after the game is made) but had too hard of a time and just said fuck it don't reference anything at all

Most people don't really think of fighting games in the "live service" sense but this also very much applies to them. Doesn't help when casual players try to relate to issues pros have when its something that realistically aren't thinking about on a game to game basis.
