And it's not that I'm not aware of those handholds, it's that I see them and they just aren't solid enough to convince me to use them. Meanwhile take any TTRPG with some actual worldbuilding and shit and I read through the book and I can think of dozens of cool character ideas to create.

Holy shit this is exactly it, this is the feeling I get when reading through the Player's Handbook and why I get 0 inspiration from it, I couldn't put it into words before.
