I come from a similar background, and same, I had no mentors when I started in the industry back in 2016. I also don't have a degree in journalism, or any college degree, I grew up poor that was never an option for me. And yet, here I still am. Mentors are great, being a self-starter is better.

100% agree, it just makes me sad to see content creators push bad takes under the guise of "the past was better" when they're cherry-picking the past. Games of the past were also largely created by diverse, progressive teams. The "past" these people are clinging to isn't reflective of reality.

Loud voices love to weaponize retro gaming nostalgia for regressive takes, but most retro fans (preservationists, speedrunners, devs, journalists) are here for the love of the games and gaming history. Working in the retro game scene, our teams and communities are largely diverse and progressive.
