Not what I signed up for as a HS teacher, but there we are.

Episode brought me right back to to the feeling in spring 2021 when I (public HS teacher in NJ) couldn’t find a vaccine anywhere, but my cousin (work from home lawyer in PA) got one without issue. Because, “essential personnel.”

I teach 10th grade (American) English and “Fences” is the best written and consistently the best received text. The kids are enraptured by it. Wilson is one of our most important American writers for sure.

I teach high school and every day they make me feel better about our future.

We are watching it in my house for the first time (I’m 43) and I’m obsessed. It’s better than I ever imagined. Mind blowing they did this stuff on network television in the ‘80’s.

The juxtaposition of that riveting last scene to the weirdness of the rest of the episode is pure poetry.

Also Philip Michael Thomas’ Tubbs is an unproblematic male character 40 years before that became something people ask for. Tubbs only drinks juice! Does yoga on stakeouts! Treats women with respect and as equals!

The Victorian man’s responses to modern feminism were surprising and entertaining, if not rooted in reality. He’s a character I couldn’t not fall in love with a little myself. Felt a little like a modern Jane Austen at times.
