I grew up in Ottery and the remarkable points are (a) there is a children's version with smaller flaming barrels and (b) injuries are extremely rare. Last I heard some people fell off a wall while viewing the tar barrels. It compares favourably to the cheese rolling!

I would have assumed that peppercorns would be imported and thus at a premium compared to, say, an ear of corn.

Afraid not. I agree with you - I always like a hard copy. But the sales difference between the hard copy earlier edition and the ebooks was hugely in favour of the latter. I assume that at 900 pages no one can carry it - although very useful to prop open sash windows.
