I haven't tried this, but if you are flying in on one airline and flying out on another, you can try asking the airlines to transfer your checked luggage.

If you're in a part of the world that supports it, use Yandex maps. Super reliable down to which crossing to take, or which metro car for the right exit.
Turn on Transport option or activate the bus icon if directions are set to see real time public transport moving on the map.

Airalo: is my go to otherwise is Airalo. I've never had an issue with them. But there's a lot of providers out there. Reddit is your friend for recs.

I love love love esims. I tried Roamless Flex this time - slightly higher data charges but you're only charged what you use. As a result this was my cheapest ever esim. Plus you can just activate it wherever you need it, no need to keep buying new ones.

Stayed in a proper capsule here. It was fine, very quiet, and I achieved the object of getting some sleep. Leave your footwear outside the capsule.

I have stayed in a cheap place 2 metro stops from the airport, and at the landside capsule hotel.
The metro was super easy - I bought a return ticket from the machine.
The capsule hotel was brilliant, and cheap at the price.

NZ is a really awkward place to get to / from. That said, long layovers can be your friend, if there's cheap accommodation at or near the airport.
If you have time to go through immigration, landside is much cheaper.
