Polk County Florida statement on #NationalHispanicHeritageMonth
This week marks the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month. Unfortunately, our political climate is such that instead of joyfully celebrating the many and varied contributions Hispanic People have made to our collective American greatness, our friends and family live in fear. The Supreme Court's recent Shadow Docket destruction of the Fourth Amendment was a chilling prologue to what is supposed to be a celebration. The Polk County Democrats remain committed to supporting our Hispanic Heritage as Hispanic Heritage is American Heritage. There is no American Culture without Hispanic Culture. Most importantly, we remain dedicated to advocating against the terrorizing and unlawful detention of these communities. In these times we also must be defiant with our collective joy. In our joy we maintain our dignity, our pride, and our strength. In this spirit, come out for the Polk County Hispanic Heritage Festival on September 20th from 10am-2pm at Gwynn Park in Winter Haven. Our statement about the Pulse massacre.
Polk County Democrats Florida Today is a sad day of remembrance. It marks the 9th anniversary of the Pulse massacre. It was a violent hate-filled event that shook a community, a city, and a nation. The Polk County Democratic Party wishes to honor all those we lost. We wish to honor all of the survivors and families. We wish to honor the LGTBQ+ community. We wish to honor the Hispanic community. We wish to honor the first responders and every brave person burdened by this senseless act. The Polk County Democratic party recognizes that, unlike our bigoted Governor, victims of the Pulse massacre were a majority LGTBQ and Hispanic and that the motivation was hate. We stand with these communities in solidarity and will continue to honor their memories by supporting candidates who seek to represent all peoples and protect the rights of every community.
