Suggest that the President, Vice President, and all members of White House staff refrain from "punishing, belittling, and even sparking violence against" progressive ideas for one month before requiring similar of higher education institutions.

Provocative essay @BostonReview: maybe intellectuals don't really have a distinctive role in defending democracy and freedom today, as Chomsky argued in his classic 1967 essay. Reminded me of this event, back in 2015, when I had the privilege of hosting Noam @harvardkennedy.bsky.social.

Republican Party policy positions are lagging shifts in their constituents. Probably Democrats also, but in the opposite direction.

@adamprz.bsky.social offered interesting typology of "backsliding" on two dimensions: (i) does the politician grab power? (ii) does the politician have a revolutionary program? I don't think (ii) is really backsliding. I rebuilt his table with additional cases:
