He looks at himself in the mirror one last time, squaring his shoulders, practicing projecting more confidence than he has. But he looks acceptable for the occasion. And seeing the hope in his own eyes makes Stede even more determined not to let himself down.

He fusses with his hair until he’s satisfied that it doesn’t look as if he’s fussed over it; he cleans his glasses until they’re spotless, chuckling wryly at the memory of encountering Ed face first when they met. At least he’s confident he can avoid 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 particular mishap this time around.

So although Stede relishes any chance to wrangle every complex sartorial detail down to a whimsical pocket-square, he keeps it simple today, donning some nicely tailored khakis and a simple slim-cut button-down in a soft peachy-pink with no tie.

They’ll be very much in each other’s personal space, so Stede has to make sure he smells good. But drenching himself in something more potent seems risky at best, deeply off-putting at worst, so he won’t run the risk of wearing any stronger scents Ed might not like.

He eats leftovers for lunch, scrolling aimlessly on his phone; he showers and brushes his teeth and applies the Tom Ford Oud Wood deodorant he was using when they met.

Since faculty dance club is in the early afternoon, Stede has a number of hours to fill before then. It’s both good and bad that he doesn’t have the kids this weekend: good since he didn’t need to negotiate any special deals with Mary; bad because he’s fully on his own at the moment.
