Meanwhile, on the other side of the Atlantic were experiencing an abnormally mild November, and the same appears to be the case over most of the Northern Hemisphere.

Thanks for making me aware of that. Now deleted, corrected and reposted.

Even Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the UN, now acknowledges that holding to the 1.5°C goal is unachievable. The important thing now though is to recognise that every fraction of a degree matters.

As an aside, the article also quotes the lead coordinator for the Indigenous Environmental Network, Brenna Yellowthunder.
What a fantastic name! If I ever feel the need for a name change that's something to take inspiration from.

Nevertheless, the way to dispel any argument is to go into the area the glacier retreated from over the past few years and survey the newly-exposed seabed there in detail.

It seems to me that many in the glaciological community don't recognise the significance of ice plains. In offshore data we see many examples of places where they formed at stages during ice retreat after the Last Glacial Maximum.

It's referred to as the "Fen Reservoir" and is to be constructed on a site near Chatteris in Cambridgeshire. The projected water supply from the reservoir underpins the challenging development targets for the region.

No, we won't need it. Here are the reasons. We know what needs to be done to mitigate climate change. We need to double down on this and raise the level of ambition, not waste time on dangerous distractions.

Agreed, but what's likely and what we can't rule out given present knowledge are two different things.

Any thoughts on how much sense it makes to build a new reservoir on a site presently at sea level and within a few kilometres of tidal rivers?

For a while some ice will remain on the pinning point. This rest of the ice shelf is likely to fragment in a similar fashion that ice coming across the grounding zone further west has done over the past few years. Acceleration of flow of ice from upstream will probably continue for some time.

Yes, as I said, ITGC scientists have been reporting on this for years and predicted the ice shelf demise. Because of its thinning and fracturing over the past few decades though it is now doing little to impede flow of the glacier. Glacier flow upstream of the ice shelf already accelerated.

Part of the reason for this is probably that the news media have seen it all before - world leaders show up year after year for the photo opportunities and to make grand speeches, but this rarely translates into any significant actions. There are obvious actions the UK could be taking, but isn't.

We can't be certain of that. The last time glaciers retreated into marine basins nobody was around to record it, so however good anyone thinks their model is there is nothing to validate it against.

At least one of that pair isn't elected yet and hopefully never will be. The alleged killer being British and the LNER employee who heroically tried to stop him being Algerian-born really isn't fitting into their racist playbook, but I doubt a few facts will stop them blowing their dog whistles.
