Asst Prof, Ex-pat Texan, biogeocheminist and arctic scientist, excited about organic matter and rivers. Water science, fluffy pet photos, #QueerinSTEM, and crafty things.
I recently re-read Forgotten Beasts of Eld, a beautiful little book.

The cover of the paperback copy i had in high school is the first image. The cover of the current Amazon listing is the second.

What happened??? This half-assed photoshop slop can't have been worth it.

One of my traditions is tacos/tex Mex every election day, in honor of my wish for a taco truck on every stretch corner. Luckily, even in rural western PA, theres an excellent taco truck the next town over.

Not quite barbacoa at the bog since this wetland is pretty basic, but still good.

Very happy with these! The planter has the San Joaquin River (California), the orbs are the Rivanna River (Virginia) and the Kuparuk River (Alaska)

Is my clay-splattered purse containing 2 books, a wallet, and a drop spindle really the most comfortable spot to sit?

As curious as a cat!

For context, Mack was named for the Mackenzie River and my previous cat was named for the Yukon, so im leaning towards keeping the Arctic theme

We found some caribou fluff on the tundra, so of course I spun it up into to some yarn. My student plans to give it to his partner to adorn something she knits!

Maybe if this science thing doesn't work out, I'll become a musk ox rancher. Isn't she cute?

Back in Fairbanks after a week or so on the North Slope! We were on the Jago River in ANWR, studying ice wedge polygons, hydrology, and carbon cycling. Awesome site, great team, and I learned way more about mosses than I ever could have anticipated

Off to the Jago River in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge! Owen, a student at Alleghent, posed for the requisite Arctic Circle photo as he passed 66N for the first time!

Talk to you in 7-9 days!

I had to say goodbye to my buddy Mack this week. Hug and scritch your critters for me!

If his romps thu wetlands or along the beach ever brought you joy, kick a few bucks to a local conservation or wetland org! He was never happier than when Going Places, especially if he could get wet and mucky.

Ended the trip with a visit to a 6th generation woolen mill, run by a friend's cousin! They were doing some stream restoration on the old mill run, too!
