This week the 2025 @wildwaterwhales.bsky.social team goes into the field! The team are journeying to South Georgia by ✈️ and 🚢, to study humpback whale foraging behaviour & feeding rates.

After FK ▶️

Six whales (3 ID'd females) went to Península Valdés calving ground, Argentina, for up to 3 months 🐳

Three males went foraging in the SW Atlantic, incl South Orkney & South Shetland islands, Scotia Sea &
Peninsula ❄️❄️

Nearly all foraged at the Patagonian Shelf in spring

Whales stayed locally for up to 2 months & mostly used the East #Falkland N/NE coast to breed & socialise 🐳🐳

🟩: Important Marine Mammal Area for right whales #IMMA
🔴: v slow movements, breeding/socialising
🟡: intermediate speed movements incl foraging
⚫: fast movements, travelling

A daily highlight is feeding this little guy each evening but I'm worried s/he is too small to manage through winter.. hoping they'll eat enough before it gets really cold. Any advice out there? #hedgehog

This is the third season @wildwaterwhales.bsky.social has studied #whales from small boats in Cumberland Bay. We regularly see humpback #whales particularly in the Bay entrance. Here are our sightings five years ago- excited to see what's there this season!

We're installing three underwater moorings in Cumberland Bay, South Georgia, to listen to local #whales & vessels from January 2025 🐳
