The OP implies that Boring's problem failure to execute. The real problem is that it's simply a bad idea. Underground transport for high (we call them "subways") are superbly effective, (cf. Asia and elsewhere). Swapping that for low-volume slow transport is just plain dumb

My parents got one in '73, in that same blue color. I was disappointed - I preferred the Datsun B210 for some reason. It was a great car, until it wasn't -- they had a novel engine design ("CVCC") which used less gas but eventually blew engine gaskets. It was definitely fun to drive.

Visually stimulating, but ultimately boring
