My favourite AI startups are the ones founded by former OpenAI execs Ilya Sutskever and Mira Murati. They've both raised billions without telling investors what they'll build or how they'll make money, and are worth $30bn to $50bn. I hope they move to an island!

AI Startups Founded By Former OpenAI People That Don’t Appear To Do Much I want to be clear that I think both Mira Murati and Ilya Sutskever are fucking awesome, in the sense that they are effectively looting venture capitalists who lack object permanence. Thinking Machines (Mira Murati) — Raised $2bn at a $12bn valuation in July, now trying to raise more money at a $50bn valuation Few companies encapsulate the weirdness of the present moment than Thinking Machines, which was founded by ousted OpenAI executive Mira Murati last year. With no product or revenue, and only a small crew of former OpenAI staffers, Thinking Machines was able to raise a record $2bn seed round — easily the largest seed round in history, and it’s not even close. At the start of October, it launched its first product — Tinker, a training API for fine-tuning large language models with a waitlist, I assume because the product is so good, and not because Thinking Machines has to limit access to it because it’s so expensive. It is, as of yet, unclear how much revenue the company has managed to bring in, or what other products it plans to launch, and yet it’s currently trying to raise yet another round. According to Bloomberg, the company is aiming for a valuation of $50bn — although it could ultimately go higher, perhaps to $55bn or $60bn. If successful, it would be one of the most valuable private startups in the world. And I’m still, even after having written all this, unsure what it actually does. Safe Superintelligence (Ilya Sutskever) — $32bn valuation; $3bn (at least) in funding; only 20 employees Safe Superintelligence was founded in mid-2024 by Ilya Sutskever, himself a co-founder of OpenAI who was ousted after the failed putsch of Sam Altman that year. As the name suggests, it aims to create a super intelligence — AGI — but... safely. Three months after its founding, Safe Superintelligence raised $1bn at a $5bn valuation, with Andreessen Horowitz (which also backed Thinking Machines) participating. In March of this year, it raised an additional $2bn at a $32bn valuation — even though it doesn’t have a product, revenue, a proper website, and, with 20 employees, has about the same headcount as a McDonald’s franchise. This is the website of a $32bn company that raised $1bn in the first few months of its existence Meta tried to buy it a few months ago. It was turned down. Ilya Sutskever has a kind of Jesus-like reputation in the valley, despite not having done anything for quite some time. Six months ago, a source told me that Ilya had told them two months previously that superintelligence was “two months away.” Anyway, yeah, he’s full of shit. I bet one or both of these companies ends up being a Theranos or Clinkle situation. Neoclouds To quote myself: The latter revenue stream of which is where Jensen Huang found a solution to that eternal growth problem: the neocloud, namely CoreWeave, Lambda and Nebius. These businesses are fairly straightforward. They own (or lease) data centers that they then fill full of servers that are full of NVIDIA GPUs, which they then rent on an hourly basis to customers, either on a per-GPU basis or in large batches for larger customers, who guarantee they'll use a certain amount of compute and sign up to long-term (i.e. more than an hour at a time) commitments. A neocloud is a specialist cloud compute company that exists only to provide access to GPUs for AI, unlike Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google …
