Just in case you were thinking about skipping the Palazzo dei Normanni on the grounds of it being a bit too obvious like... on no account do. Honestly one of the most memorable sights I've seen in Italy. The loo location/ extortion is unforgivable, but other than that A++

I mean really, you can only laugh can't you.

I don't want to *buy* the parking space, I'm using it for maybe 2hrs. The proportional costs related to that would be less than the £5-10 cost of writing, managing and posting 3 letters about an appointment that's already passed.

I'll take your word for that, because I've never lived anywhere where my first time trying out the bus service wasn't an abject disaster. And yes I'd still *prefer* to drive, because public transport contains other people and their meals/ smartphone speakers/ crying babies. But I wouldn't always.

Hell yeah. With my own choice of soundtrack, temperature, personal space etc...of course I'd be in my car.
Managing car parks shouldn't be expensive, it's a bit of tarmac not an operating theatre. The NHS will spend more on the 3 letters they send me about an appt the week before...

Absolutely agree. And almost nobody has it. But expensive parking doesn't fix that, it just mens things worse for those going to the hospital?
Give me reliable cheap public transport *first*, then come in with the parking charges stick.
May 10, 2025 at 7:45 AM
OK but depending on the condition/ circumstances, any of those things has the potential to be acutely traumatic and stressful. Unpredictable public transport is just another stressor.
May 10, 2025 at 7:43 AM
Is the hospital next to a shopping centre? Surely people aren't using the car park for fun, if they need to be there then they need to be there, why should they be penalised with expensive parking? If there's one time I wouldn't fancy chancing it on a bus, it'd be if I was ill...
May 10, 2025 at 7:33 AM
Ugh I hate those schemes. So now people who don't want to commute to an office in the first place also get penalised for needing to park there. How about, instead, we double Corp tax for employers who insist on staff traveling to a different location in order to do email and answer the phone?
May 9, 2025 at 9:05 PM
Yup I guess that works.

Would the result be an increase in just getting stuff delivered from amazon etc though? I already do that rather than pay parking and then find that what I want isn't in the shop anyway...
May 9, 2025 at 9:01 PM
But again, back in the real world... it would take quite some legal contortions to ban providing free parking on private land. So do you want to be right, or do you want to keep town centres alive?
May 9, 2025 at 8:48 PM
But knowing that, why is it apparently impossible for most towns to do the obvious thing and provide the same free parking you get on a retail park? Surely that's just as perverse as the drivers spending £5 on petrol to save £3 in parking!

I want to laugh but that image is heartbreaking. And I'm not even American.

I usually find that getting up and heading towards the front desk does the trick...

Wouldn't set foot in the place. I'm genuinely worried for an American friend who's visiting family at the end of next week. She's hardly Che Guevara but def not a fan of the regime.

Hopefully it'll be great for him and the electorate - he gets a bit more influence to make sane stuff happen than he had in the UK, you guys get a grownup in charge. Best of luck!

Yup! South Park: The Musical is one of the most underrated creations of that decade IMHO. Musically it's very clever, too.

Thankyou for the reminder that I need to stay off social until I watch it tonight!!

It's an underused option in general. I'm also a fan of "Kyle's mum's a bitch" with minor adaptations to fit the scenario 😁

Reader, that pencil came out perfect. I've since tried holding everything in my right hand when sharpening, from eye pencils with those cheap sharpeners built into the caps, to fancy art pastels, and...all perfect. 🤯🤯🤯

Great job 👏

I was saying many years before covid (but around the time they were threatening to tax parking spaces at work as a benefit in kind) that a *really* green policy would be to tax all companies who made people commute to an office in order to do email all day.
