Toro's entire career is being seen as difficult while being sellable to a wide audience. For people without the energy/time/desire to go looking for different films, Toro is, or was for a short time, the most interesting thing they'd be served. Both get something from the fantasy, so it endures.

Thanks for putting the visuals and character thing into words. I didn't know why I saw a billboard for GdT's Frankenstein and immediately said "well, I can live without ever seeing that", but you said it right. He really is just horror Baz Luhrman.

Pan's Labyrinth was unusually prominent for a non Anglophone film with unusual visuals and a historical setting outside of the three historical settings Hollywood likes. Therefore, it is the most challenging film people who don't think about cinema a lot have seen. Therefore, he must be genius.
