I remember having a discussion about "V for Vendetta" years ago where my friend said something to the effect of "it's an entertaining story but it's a totally over the top caricature of society. Something like that could never happen".

A court verdict or lack thereof is only relevant *in court*. People can have an opinion based on what has been reported and whether they believe it.
