On childhood road trips through Illinois and Wisconsin, my brother and I would chant about the crops growing on opposite sides of the state highway: "Up with corn! Down with soybeans!" Call it self-indoctrination, but these days a bowl of corn salad is the first thing I think to pack for a picnic in Prospect Park. It's simply a big pile of tasty produce: no skips, all bangers. On the corn-preparation question, I'm kind of a square-blanching is my preference. It rounds out the kernels' sweetness and preserves just enough crunch to accentuate the other veggies. Make no mistake, though: canned or frozen is verboten for this dish. When I'm tearing husks and strewing silks all over the kitchen, that's how I know it's summer. Versions vary, but here's mine: Place four or so ears of corn in a pot of boiling water until they're tender, then throw them in an ice bath until cool. Cut off the kernels and add them to a bowl with any combination of diced cherry tomatoes (or one heirloom tomato); diced red onion; a diced cucumber; one cup of feta or cotija cheese; and an avocado, in small chunks. Add a few handfuls of cilantro or mint (but not both). And finish with a few glugs of olive oil; a splash of red-wine vinegar or lime juice; and salt and pepper. —Jasper Davidoff, puzzles-and-games producer

Police arrested a Manhattan woman for allegedly stealing nearly $90,000 through the seldom enforced crime of fortune telling, according to police and court documents. And a former New York cop-turned-psychic-hunter said he was instrumental in the arrest. Pamela Ufie, 29, was arrested Thursday for a 2023 incident during which police say she told a 43-year-old client that the woman's son suffered from a generational curse. Ufie allegedly convinced the woman to spend $87,000 on "specialty materials necessary to conduct rituals that would help the Defendant defeat the curse.”
