And now because the US constitution has become practically impossible to amend, and SCOTUS is packed with people that are against the idea of implicit powers… we’re just stuck with this system forever.

But for example, the US government has almost zero control over schools.

The US Dept of Education can influence schools by offering them money with strings attached, but aside from discrimination rules they can’t otherwise control things.

It’s actually by law. The US constitution prohibits the federal government from having any powers that the constitution does not explicitly grant it.

There are some advantages—for example, it would be difficult for Trump to rig an election because the US government has little control.

So there’s both the weird requirement that you register to vote ahead of time, and then the fact that the two-party system here leverages state election systems to run what are effectively their own internal elections (the inner workings of political parties in the US are not really regulated).

But since voting in the US is a patchwork of 51 (+territories) voting laws, progress limps along slowly, and only in the states that are motivated to change.

And it’s not necessarily the states you’d expect.

Voter registration laws were partially intended to prevent fraud.

A century ago, someone could try to vote in several different precincts if same-day registration were allowed. With modern technology this isn’t really a problem anymore.

Of course, the laws are also intended to suppress turnout.

Only 23 states allow same-day registration for general elections!

WA allows same-day registration even though we vote entirely by mail—I think you can print a ballot or something.

We also don’t have party registration, and the only partisan primary is for President—you just only vote one ballot.
