Using difference-in-differences models, we find that firms that start supplying to Chinese FDI firms based in Vietnam may experience significant gains in labor productivity. This effect is specific to Chinese FDI, as we find no positive spillovers from supplying to FDI firms on average.

The solar panel industry has grown to a total of around 400 firms and 51,000 jobs in 2022, including firms that supply inputs to solar panel producers. Among them, Chinese firms and their suppliers account for the large majority of jobs.

Chinese FDI firms account for 25 of the 79 firms producing solar panels in Vietnam, yet they account for 75% of Vietnam's solar panel exports and 50% of total employment among solar panel firms in Vietnam. Their solar panel are cheaper, especially those exported to the US.

We show China accounts for most input supplies to Vietnam's firms, with 600+ firms exporting 100+ different inputs. Inputs from China are cheaper than those from other countries, and all covered by subsidies (ht Global Trade Alert). Vietnamese firms' benefit from Chinese subsidized cheap inputs.

New WP thread! 🤓 Vietnam's solar panel exports boomed between 2018 and 2022. With my PhD student Meng Yu Ngov, Trang Thu Tran, and Gaurav Nayyar we look at how this industry success can be attributed to attracting FDI and importing parts and components, as well to Chinese subsidy spillovers.👇

Cool new data on startups co-founded by immigrant and native-born teams in the US: "Native-migrant startups have larger employment three years after founding, are more likely to secure funding, access larger funding rounds, and achieve more successful exits" www.nber.org/papers/w33804

A few more years of trash talk, misinformation, and brainwashing, and the US public will think it's a good idea to invade Canada, and US soldiers will be comfortable with bombing and killing Canadians. www.economist.com/graphic-deta...

Highly recommend the Norwegian oil museum in Stavanger. They managed to turn this oil stuff into widely shared prosperity. Well done.

The US shouldn't get to host the World Cup next year. Or we split the cup in two, teams from democratic counties play in Mexico/Canada, the US gets all its beloved autocracies. Which cup will be better ?🤔😁
