23 countries target domestic fossil fuel consumption cuts...
No country has provided a quantified target for winding down oil & gas production.

#3 The greatest health burden from all O&G stages are found in the most populated states (CA, TX, NY, PA, NJ). End-use activities dominate all incidences, except for cancer risk in specific states with large O&G extraction basins, such as CO, TX, and ND.

🚨 OUT NOW! Our new @science.org study led by @kohrathefog.bsky.social is the first to comprehensively quantify the health impacts of and inequities in outdoor air pollution exposure across all stages of the US oil and gas lifecycle: extraction ➡️ transport/storage ➡️ refining/processing ➡️ end-use. 🧵

"We are in the dawn of a new energy era.
An era where cheap, clean, abundant energy powers a world rich in economic opportunity.
And the gift of power is a gift for all.
That world is within reach.
But it won’t happen on its own.
It is up to us.
This is our moment of opportunity." 🌅

Nevertheless, as the UN Secretary-General said,
"The energy transition is unstoppable.
But the transition is not yet fast enough or fair enough."
The deployment of and investment in renewable energy technologies have so far been highly concentrated in advanced economies and China.

As our report argues, to avoid #CarbonTunnelVision, renewables-based solution should also be prioritized in delivering universal "clean cooking" access by 2030. www.sei.org/perspectives...

Meanwhile, dependence on fossil fuel imports exposes
countries to volatile prices, supply disruptions, and geopolitical turmoil. Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, consumers worldwide on average spent 20% more on energy bills than the previous 5-year average.

🌅 A new clean energy economy is emerging, powering GDP growth and creating jobs while helping to decouple growth from emissions. In 2023, the sector added around USD 320 billion to the global economy, accounting for almost
5% of GDP growth in India, 6% in the USA, 20% in China, and ~33% in the EU.

📈 Experts believe that solar and wind energy have entered a virtuous cycle of cost decline and widespread adoption. In 2024:
☀️ Renewables made up 92.5% of all new electricity capacity additions.
🌬️Solar PV was 41% cheaper, and onshore wind 53% cheaper, than the least-cost new fossil fuel options.

in keeping with the science," which unsurprisingly has no concrete numbers attached to it.
But no worries, I got you 😉 See, e.g., (1) 2024 #EmissionsGap Report, Table 6.1...

And global 1.5°C-aligned mitigation scenarios, such as those assessed in the @ipcc.bsky.social #AR6 or by the @iea.org, give us important guiding benchmarks, like the 60% GHG emissions cut by 2035 and tripling renewables & doubling energy efficiency by 2030 goals countries committed to at #COP28.

👀 Looking to 2025, all (climate wonks') eyes will be on countries' new national climate plans due well before #COP30. This is the first time Parties have committed to submitting 1.5°C-aligned #NDCs, and the last time they can credibly do so before the remaining #carbonbudget is almost depleted...

The report also spells out the 2035 emissions reduction targets different countries could consider in their new #NDCs due next year. Aligning national energy strategies — including fossil fuel production & consumption targets — with climate goal will be crucial for creating policy coherence.

ICYMI: The IEA released one of the most important and consequential reports for 2024–25 during #NYCW, clearly demonstrating the risks & pitfalls of interpreting the #COP28 #Para28 energy transition goals as a pick-and-mix menu rather than their full implementation to keep 1.5°C within reach.
