It has consistent behavior for L=0 (black) and L=100% (white) it’s just not possible to have perceptually uniform gradients along arbitrary lines because display color spaces like sRGB and P3 aren’t convex in Lch or Lab so some lines leave the space and get clipped

Although it probably has similar constraints. OKLab is pretty uniform? It’s possible you got outside the bounds where it’s able to be uniform? The color picker here visualizes the gaps in display color spaces pretty well: oklch.com
