IMO, safety planning/crisis response planning are great tools which should be implemented more often.

Alternative explanation: in the first months, depression is difficult to treat for a substantial proportion of patients.
This would fit the evidence and also my clinical experience (also intuition: if you have lost something important, it's difficult to speed up adaptation to the loss)
