Our method TE-PWS gives a computationally cheap solution using statistical physics tools. With the ground-truth from TE-PWS, we even found the regimes where other commonly used approximate methods make large systematic errors.
TE-PWS is exact for all Langevin+Master equations. Exciting times ahead!

Since the introduction of the Transfer Entropy by Schreiber in 2000, it has been a prohibitively challenging quantity to compute. A ground-truth estimate without approximations would be very useful to analyze time-series in networks with loops: physical, biochemical and even financial markets!
