A few years ago, I was in Sonoma and met with winemakers Bibiana González Rave and Jeff Pisoni. Over sushi, they told me about their joint project, Shared Notes, a collaboration between the two accomplished winemakers and partners in life. I was immediately captivated by the nose of the Lambrusco with its aromatic rush of dark fruit, violets, and spice. While attending the Simply Italian wine event in Los Angeles this week, I participated in a seminar about a region of Italy that I was not very familiar with. That might seem like a surprise since I have studied Italian wine and have traveled to Italy many times. The wine is Frascati, named after a tiny ancient town in the hills just southwest of Rome. On a visit to Alma Rosa Winery in the Santa Ynez Valley, I was looking at a rack of wine bottles, recognizing the dark blue label with a drawing of the vineyard. But then I noticed a deep, dark purple label with the same image. I had never seen this label before and it caught my eye. I took a closer look and it was not Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, or Pinot Gris. From the first time I visited Fattoria La Maliosa in Maremma, I was captivated. A natural winery in the truest sense, La Maliosa is a hub of biodiversity, a place where vineyards, olive groves, and wild nature live in harmony.
