Today's WIP Wednesday is actually not SatoSugu for once but it is still JJK (manga spoilers ahead).
Gojo didn’t leave a key to his apartment, at least not one that anyone had been able to find so far. “Bastard could teleport,” Ieri had scoffed fondly, chomping on the piece of gum that was replacing her cigarette. “Probably didn’t have to worry about things like house keys.” But she at least knew the address, having visited previously, which was more than even Fushiguro could say. Still, Yuta was grateful Fushiguro was accompanying him. Gojo had helped raise him on some level, or at least, they’d known each other a lot longer than the 2 years Yuta had, 2 years that somehow was enough to leave him as inheritor of the entire Gojo legacy. Distant ancestors or not, Yuta felt Fushiguro had more legitimate claim to call Gojo family than he ever had. They pushed their way through the building’s revolving door to the lobby - floors polished to a reflective sheen, walls decorated with tasteful but impersonal artwork, potted palms branching toward the floor-to-ceiling windows that made up the front entryway. It was empty in the intimidating way that denoted wealth. A solid block of a reception desk loomed in the center of the room, and a doorman in a uniform sat behind it. Yuta took a deep breath to steady himself, and strode forward to the desk, Fushiguro trailing behind. “Can I help you?” The doorman asked. The words themselves were polite and professional, but the undertone of his voice clearly indicated he knew they did not belong there. Of course. This seemed like the kind of building where the staff would be required to recognize and address all residents by name. Yuta cleared his throat. “We’re here about Gojo Satoru. I’m the executor of his estate.” The doorman nodded. Of course he’d been informed. Shoko and Yuta and Megumi had made phone calls. They’d been making phone calls all week. This setting is going to be painfully American suburban, and rather than trying to edit it out, I decided to just lean it.
“Yello?” Gojo chirped as he tapped the button to pick up the incoming call on his steering wheel. “Gojo,” the voice on the other end began. “Ahh, Utahime!” Gojo crowed as he merged left to pass the truck ahead of him. He’d recognize that clipped, irritated tone anywhere. “To what do I owe this call?” “Don’t start,” Utahime griped. “…I need a favor,” she sighed, sounding like the admission physically pained her. “Wow!” Gojo chortled. “You must really be desperate if you called me! Okay, lay it on me: how is the damsel in distress?” “Respect your elders for one moment in your life! I’m not a damsel!” “Yeesh, no need to get snippy.” He smirked at the sound of Utahime’s growl on the other end of the line. If she didn’t want to be teased she shouldn’t have made it so easy to push her buttons. “You are damn lucky you’re good with animals because no human being could stand you,” she grumbled. “Yep, yep,” he acknowledged, grinning, as he weaved back into the other lane. “So you need me, huh?” Another sigh. It sounded like Utahime was gritting her teeth. “There’s a stray dog loose on my block.” “Animal Control, not my problem. Come on, Utahime, you know how this works. Mandatory stray hold with the city and then we can pull ‘em.” “Gojo. You know the city shelter is full.” “Utahime,” He drew her name out the same way she’d done his. “We don’t have facilities for any random dog. Can’t you keep him?” “You know I’m gone 12 hours a day,” She snapped. “Between planning and faculty meetings and supervising clubs, I’m lucky if I’m home by 7 or 8 on a good night. And I’d need catch the damn thing first.” “Ah HA, so that’s what you need big strong Satoru Gojo for!” He could practically hear Utahime’s glare. “Look,” she gritted out. “I think I know the owners, they live a few blocks from me, just help me catch it and we can bring it back and you can get on with your life.” “Okies~” he sang in a way he knew would irritate her. “Where’m I meeting you?” Geto remembered this puppy. She’d been part of the litter Honey had whelped last fall, after he’d bred her to Shadowfall Kennels’ grand champion, Playful Cloud. Fushiguro Toji, Shadowfall’s owner, wasn’t the most pleasant man to humans, but he raised confident, study dogs. They traced some of their pedigree to the Zen’ins, who had bred some impressively decorated Shepherds over the years. Fushiguro and Shadowfall specialized in animals for protection work rather than conformation showing, but Playful Cloud had titles in his own right, both in the show ring and in Schutzhund. He had a beautiful top line, and moved with the effortless grace Suguru loved to see in a German Shepherd, with a drive that would compliment Honey’s calm, watchful nature well. This wasn’t Honey’s first litter, so he’d known she was a capable and dedicated mother. She’d given birth to 8 healthy chubby puppies, and Geto had decided to name them after the four seasons, two for each. In a bit of egotism he’d given the two he was most fond of “summer” names: Midsummer Night’s Dream, a red and black female who had the most physical resemblance to her sire, and Summer Lovin’, a male who his friend Larue was currently showing for him. The others had gone to buyers. He always tried to keep up with them, though some families stayed in closer touch than others. Can’t Help Falling in Love (a stretch, but he liked the pun) was adopted by a family whose oldest son was training him in agility. Autumn Leaves was running circles around the herding trials scene. Hazy Shade of Winter, White Winter Hymnal, Blue Spring of Youth, and April in Paris had all gone to be family pets. He encouraged his buyers to keep in touch with him, though some always did more than others, especially after the first several months once their puppy had settled into their life and routine.
