I have so many fond memories of playing Duke Nukem games, and especially 3D. I agree with basically everything you said 😊 Kind of ironic that you bought it packaged with Quake, though 😄

As you said, we should celebrate those companies and the pride they have in their work!

I'm a firm believer in the jobs-to-be-done theory, but the social and emotional "jobs" are often overlooked even though they can be the most important driver.

The vast majority of companies are small-to-midsize, and they pay their employees, and the companies provide for the owners as well.

Maybe they won't scale to millions or billions of customers, but not everything has to.

There are countless companies with compelling histories and personalities that make them unique, and a lot of the time customers are not just buying to satisfy the obvious need. There are deeper reasons.

Very good points! I'd add that the Silicon Valley approach to business is scale, scale, scale, so from that angle it's quite natural to think about uniqueness only from the product/features POV.

But there are countless other dimensions that can make what you do unique.

Visually yes, but functionally the Magic Mouse has had more “buttons” for a long time. It’s just that they are terrible to use, and you can’t distinguish them from the mouse surface.

It’s baffling how Apple can design the best trackpads in the industry, and at the same time design such godawful mice. I struggle to understand why anyone would choose to use an Apple mouse.

maximize shareholder value.

If you’re not solving customer problems, then you’re not a real business. Much of the claimed “shareholder value maximization” looks more like a game of finding the next sucker willing to buy the overinflated balloon before it pops.

Solving the customer problems profitably requires multiple things that I think are a positive influence on the whole: skilled personnel, understanding of the customer’s needs, competence in leadership, and investment in all aforementioned. This can rarely happen if the aim is to (short-sightedly)

The root of the issue is thinking that the purpose of a company is to maximize shareholder value. This is the cause of all sorts of detrimental outcomes. I’d argue that the purpose of a company is to solve the problems of the customers. If this can be done profitably, then there is a business.

slippery slope that must be stopped before it’s too late. We see from history that the cost of inaction is millions of dead and unfathomable suffering.

Sadly, it doesn’t seem to take much to stoke the fires of hate and violence against The Others. And once you get going, adding new groups of people to Others gets easier and easier.

Human rights are absolutely, there can be no groups of people who deserve a bit less rights. That is the real

don’t cope that well with atrocities that they have committed, hence the prevalence of PTSD in combat veterans. So, people need some external validation that the evil that they do is not actually evil, that the ones they are targeting are evil and hence they are “in the right.”
September 28, 2025 at 5:39 PM
I think practically nobody thinks that *they themselves* are evil, the evil is always something that exists outside of oneself. Maybe it’s a form of projection, either consciously or unconsciously transferring the evil within onto some suitable scapegoat?

Barring actual psychopaths, people

The Pkunk are one of the most annoying opponent in super melee: incredibly fast and agile, small and hard to hit, and then when you manage to hit them, you’re greeted with the “Hallelujah!” And have to start all over again 😅

As you might’ve guessed, Star Control 2 is one of my all time favorite games. I don’t know how many hours I’ve spent playing it, but it must be one of my top 3 games of all time 😅

Ateneum is indeed a fantastic place, and the past couple of years have been one smash hit exhibition after another. It’s also part of the “Museokortti” network (360 museums around Finland) which is brilliant: you pay 84€/year and can visit the museums in the network as often as you like.

I don’t know if it’s just because I live in Europe, or have I been lucky in my subscription providers, but I’ve never had to go through so many hoops to cancel a subscription. I have half a mind to make a formal complaint to the consumer protection authorities about the process.
